BBC FILM : THE SEWER KING - cholera epidemic film

see me again here in the nice sunday morning (in my town) and here i am going to share my review and the story line of the SEWER KING film. sewer king is one of the BBC film and it is an educational film about sewerage and epidemic cholera.. if you guys wanna know more about what is the sewer king, this is the synopsis that i made and hope you still curious and read my whole review after the synopsis. here it is ...

“The film begins with the fact an increase in population in the city of London and the collapse of sanitation facilities in London which led to a flood of all human excreta. The collapse of sanitation facilities started the spread of cholera that killed so many citizens of London. But no one of the holders of power true in estimating the root causes of cholera. They argue that cholera is spread through the air (miasma). But someway they need to fix the collapse sanitation facilities and finally, they made the largest underground channels construction when it planned to drain excreta of London residents over 11 miles away out of town.  After years of development, spent a lot of money and effort to the waste drainage system then it is successfully executed, the odor has disappeared but cholera remains plagued the residents of London. It is aware that opinions miasma had been wrong and the actual root cause of cholera have been raised in the theory of cholera as water born disease by dr. Jhon Snow.”

so guys, that is the synopsis from the sewer king. i hope that was not to boring to read and you still curious with the whole things that happen in that films also curious about my opinion about that. guys i am not going to talk to you more just let's do this !!

The City of London is a magnificent city with a population more than doubled from the previous. Civilization of London is fairly high civilization and progress. However, in 1848 the city is hit by cholera, a disease that has no known cause and no known cure but has claimed many victims in London. This disease originated from the collapse of the London urban sanitation facilities which is causing a flood of human excreta in London and cause a bad odor. Along with the spread of the cholera epidemic, other diseases also hit the city of London as typhus and dysentery. Symptoms experienced by people suffering from cholera first are diarrhea, followed by lack of fluids or dehydration. And can cause death within 48 hours. At that time, the number of victims who died of causes not all the remains can be buried. Many corpses in a coffin which is then stored at home, so mingled with household activities undertaken. Storage of the corpse can last up to a week. Obviously that is very unsanitary conditions and lower environmental quality of life of citizens in London.

Faced with the crisis, authorities in the field of waste water debate and also several times reconstitute formation in the division. But they did not produce theories, decisions and concrete solutions to be implemented. Until August 1849, they received a warning from dr. Wall Smith and several other people about the possibility of the construction work to drain the waste out of London. dr. Wall Smith suggests to drain the waste out of London following the railway line. But waste water commissioners did not respond to these proposals until dr. Wall bring up views through a newspaper which, in responding by Joseph Bazalgette an engineer who was motivated to eliminate cholera.

Joseph Bazalgette was a father who had lost his son because of cholera and lost 2 brothers and 2 sister birth of the same disease. With this background, Joseph is highly motivated to eliminate cholera from the city of London. After he was hired by the commissioner of waste water in the same year, he studied so many theories and berates-hundred plans on eliminating cholera from London. At that time the people believe in the theory Edwin Chadwik of cholera spread by air, or better known as the miasma (a disease spread through the air). Edwin found cholera as well as influenza, cholera spread through the air foul air which is actually bad happens because the overflow of human excreta after the collapse of sanitation facilities.

In early 1849, when still no one knows the cause and manner of cholera. dr. Jhon Snow tell dubious miasma theory. He collected evidence of the pattern of spread of the disease and the pattern of spread of infected victims but found irregularities. Finally in 1953 when an epidemic of cholera returned, he found the cases of cholera from drinking water from the pump in the Board. The security guard and coffee customers died after drinking water from a pump in the broad street. Two women who come from a good environment also died after drinking water from the same pump. Upon investigation it turns out the two women were drinking water pump in broad street two days earlier. dr. Jhon concluded that cholera is a water born disease of the cases and the evidence that she got. But after convincing authorities, they were declaring that it is too radical theory and were rejected. dr. Jhon remain replace existing pumps in the broad road and prove after that no more people were infected with cholera. But officials still thought that cholera was brought by air.

In 1846 Joseph became chief engineer for the biggest project that drain the waste out of London. He did speed calculation, measurement, and planning requires large pumping systems. But in February when he presented his plans, the politicians are not convinced then rejected the Joseph’s idea. Then he and his team checked up the plan to five times and each time that he also met with resistance from the government.

After a lot of that decline, in 1958 the city of London faced with a pungent odor that is very disturbing. Under pressure from the people, government later funded and commissioned Joseph to undertake the construction of a sewage drainage planning. Sewage drainage plan requires underground tunnel built along 11,000 miles from Hampston and dependent on gravity. Development is done for seven years, many of the problems that occur as a problem of construction materials, assault by artillery troops who are exercising, gas explosion, and leakage of sewerage old and entered the construction that is not ready yet until the number of workers who died because of landslides. Although Joseph blamed for these problems, but her image back either when the entire of the engineering calculation right and match together the two parts of tunnel construction in the intersection. The execution continues until Crossness pumping in the area.

Joseph believes regardless of the outbreaks that hit the city of London, in fact it is the waste water drainage systems are old does not fit with the current condition of the city of London. After construction, the system command is run properly and smoothly. The odor is gone. But three months later, cholera come re-spread in London.

William, who is one of the officials in the commissioner of waste water returned to continue his research on cholera. Until he found the case of Mr. Russell where he had five days there is without water and when he was repairing a pump, he found the eels along the 4-inch inside the pump. After cleaning the pump, then his wife and two children contracted cholera and died. William realized that eels are not supposed to be found in the water reservoir. And he believes that as long as this reservoir has been contaminated by waste water and this has been the root cause of cholera. After that, everyone realized that the theory of cholera as a water born disease is the correct theory, but unfortunately the founder of the theory that dr. Jhon Snow had died at the time.

Behind the theory of error causes cholera, we can see clearly that the construction of the waste tunnel is a good step to improve the quality of health of the citizens of London and it is not a vain thing.
